Questions from you…
and some answers from me!
In searching for answers to your questions, I read SGC Proceedings, Constitution and Bylaws, Rituals, and personal and SGC histories of the IOJD. But that doesn’t mean that I have all the answers! If you have information about the topics listed below, please share it with me. This way we can keep our IOJD history as accurate as possible. Thank you.

Do you know the history of the Bethel Flag Song? It is first mentioned in the 1965 Ritual (pg. 45). The Music Ritual Committee reported in the 1974 SGC Proceedings that 'new words' for the Bethel Flag Song have been included in the Music Ritual to be published in 1975. On pg. 16 of the 1975 Music Ritual, it states: “Words dedicated to International Order of Job's Daughters by Rose Marston, PGG".
- When did the IOJD start using the old rhinestone crowns? The rhinestone crowns were approved in 1956 and appeared in a supply catalog that was included in the Proceedings of the 1957 Supreme Session.
- Have the Landmarks changed? Grammatical changes have been made to the Landmarks since their inception in 1920, but no substantive changes have been made. First Annual Report of the Proceedings of the Supreme Guardian Council (SGC), pg. 5, reads: “The land marks of the organization were laid at this time [October 20, 1920] and it was decided to organize.” The Landmarks appear on pg. 65 of the Proceedings of the Third Annual Meeting of the SGC held October 1923. Grammatical changes appear in subsequent printings of the SGC Proceedings and the Constitution and Bylaws: 15th verse of the 42nd chapter became 42nd chapter, 15th verse; ‘laws’ became ‘bylaws’; ‘openbook’ became ‘open book’ and then ‘Open Book’.
- Do you have a history of the Degree of Royal Purple? Yes. In the Supreme Constitution and By-laws under Rules and Regulations, there is a section on Degree of Royal Purple. An introductory paragraph called "History" precedes Article I. Additional information is available in SGC Proceedings 1973, pgs.128-129 (history), pg. 140 (medallion); SGC Proceedings 1977, pgs. 59-60 (names/jurisdictions of first recipients).
- Were there any Bethels in Japan? Yes. Bethel No. 1 in Yokohama received its charter in 1972, and Bethel No. 2 in Fussa City received its charter on January 27, 1974. Two promotional brochures, "Why Choose the IOJD" and "Eligibility for Membership", were printed in Japanese. As their membership decreased, the Bethels closed in the late 1970s.
- How many editions of the Music Ritual have we had? The original Music Ritual was compiled by Mrs. Lillian Gould Faber, and then revised and compiled by Mrs. Ella K. Falkenhainer, dated 1923 (tan paperbound). The 1975 Music Ritual states: revised in 1928, 1935, 1944, 1954, 1964 and 1974. The most recent Music Ritual was published in 1989. It is a 9x12-inch format; previous Music Rituals were smaller.
- Was there a Bethel in Germany? Yes. In the 1955 Proceedings reference is made to a “Job’s Daughters Caravan to Europe” when 25 Daughters and adults accompanied the Supreme Guardian, and a Bethel was instituted in Stuttgart on July 6, 1955. The Bethel closed two years later because of a decrease in membership.
